Dr. S. Peter Gary joined SSI in June 2012 as a Senior Research Scientist. He received his B.S. in Physics from Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) and his Ph.D. in Physics from Washington University (now Washington University in St. Louis) sometime back in the Late Paleolithic Period. He has spent most of his research career at Los Alamos National Laboratory (formerly known as Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory), where he was named a Fellow of the Laboratory in 2002. His research addresses primarily the theory and simulation of waves, instabilities, and turbulence in the collisionless plasmas of the Earth’s magnetosphere and the solar wind. He is author of “Theory of Space Plasma Microinstabilities” published in hardback by Cambridge University Press in 1993, but now available only in paperback. His current research activities concern the role of pickup ion instabilities in models describing observations from the IBEX spacecraft, the contributions of various instabilities to the space weather problem of scattering the so-called “killer electrons” in the magnetosphere, and particle-in-cell simulations of whistler turbulence in the solar wind. He currently lives in Santa Fe, NM, and works part-time in the City Different and part-time at the Laboratory.
