4-Day Workshop for Scientists, Engineers,
and E/PO Professionals
SSI’s 4-day workshops have served over
350 scientists, engineers, and E/PO professionals. More than 30 NASA
missions and research programs have sent representatives, and alumni

Who is this workshop for?
- scientists interested in involvement in K-14 Education and Public
Outreach (E/PO);
- E/PO professionals who are tasked with E/PO program design and
providing meaningful ways for scientists to contribute to E/PO efforts;
or
- educators interested in gaining perspective about working with
scientists in E/PO.
What can it offer me?
- Increase your knowledge of complex educational challenges and
opportunities from a national perspective;
- Strengthen your existing E/PO program through improved awareness
and understanding of your audience, best practices, and leveraged
approaches;
- Generate new ideas and action plans for your E/PO programs through
targeted planning efforts;
- Network with talented educators and scientists engaged in high
quality E/PO efforts.
- Learn how to support the implementation of an evaluation plan
focused on improving programs and working effectively with evaluation
professionals.
When is the workshop held?
Our 4-Day Workshop is held every other spring
in Boulder, CO. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served
basis. This workshop typically fills quickly – we recommend
signing up for our mailing
list to be notified when registration
opens.
What are the workshop goals?
Enhance and sustain a national cadre
of well-informed scientists, engineers, and EPO managers who
can act as leaders and advocates for effective science EPO, and as
role models for colleagues;
Strengthen and increase the effectiveness
of EPO activities involving earth and space scientists; and
Provide participants with opportunities
for showcasing their work and networking with colleagues and
experts in education.
What are the Program Highlights?
This workshop is limited to 30-40 participants, which allows a deeper
and more involved experience than in a larger, conference setting.
Planned activities include:
- A reception for participants and presenters, including a poster
program, on the first evening of the workshop;
- A field trip to a local school;
- A realistic game simulation of the challenges of education reform
(The Change Game);
- Breakout sessions on E/PO planning and educational technology;
and
- Opportunities for substantive interaction with
practicing classroom teachers, experience with inquiry/standards
based curricular materials; and exploring the diversity of roles
for scientists in E/PO
