The
Space Science Institute of Boulder, Colorado proposes to continue
in the Broker/Facilitator role, building on 4 years of “lessons
learned” as well as on extensive experience as developers
of space science-related education and public outreach (EPO)
products in partnership with scientists and educators. We propose
to serve the same region -- AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV,
OR, UT, WA, WY -- with the addition of South Dakota. In essence
our services will bring space science to the EPO community
and EPO to the space science community in ways leading to strategically
valuable partnerships and activities.. Our goals are to act
in support of 1) space scientists (emphasizing research institutions),
2) formal education (emphasizing state-based agendas), 3) informal
education (emphasizing planetarium associations, Girl Scouts,
and traveling exhibits), and 4) underserved populations (emphasizing
indigenous and latino educators). This support includes providing
professional development opportunities; facilitating access
and use of exemplary materials; and actively facilitating EPO
participation and/or partnership. A 5th goal is to evaluate
our results. Our primary collaborator is Dr. Vicente Llamas
Co-President of the New Mexico Partnership for Mathematics
and Science Education (NMPMSE), who has served as PI of the
4-Corners Rural Systemic Initiative, and who participates in
the National Association of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions
(NASSMC). NMPMSE offers an equal, in-kind match over the 5-year
subcontract to assist with goals 2 and 4. Other key collaborators
include leaders from two western planetarium associations,
from the Girl Scouts’ Mile-Hi Council, mobile education
programs, traveling exhibit programs, and from EPO efforts
at two major research institutions. We plan extensive use of
new electronic resources (E-Brokering), including a quarterly “Bulletin
of NASA Space Science Education Opportunities in the Western
US”, and a web-based “Menu of Opportunities for
Scientists in Education” (MOSIE).
