Who is this workshop for?

  • scientists interested in involvement in K-14 Education and Public Outreach (E/PO);
  • E/PO professionals who are tasked with E/PO program design and providing meaningful ways for scientists to contribute to E/PO efforts; or
  • educators interested in gaining perspective about working with scientists in E/PO.

What can it offer me?

  • Increase your knowledge of complex educational challenges and opportunities from a national perspective;
  • Strengthen your existing E/PO program through improved awareness and understanding of your audience, best practices, and leveraged approaches;
  • Generate new ideas and action plans for your E/PO programs through targeted planning efforts;
  • Network with talented educators and scientists engaged in high quality E/PO efforts.
  • Learn how to support the implementation of an evaluation plan focused on improving programs and working effectively with evaluation professionals.

When is the workshop held?

Our 4-Day Workshop is held every other spring in Boulder, CO. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. This workshop typically fills quickly – we recommend signing up for our mailing list to be notified when registration opens.

What are the workshop goals?

Enhance and sustain a national cadre of well-informed scientists, engineers, and EPO managers who can act as leaders and advocates for effective science EPO, and as role models for colleagues;

Strengthen and increase the effectiveness of EPO activities involving earth and space scientists; and

Provide participants with opportunities for showcasing their work and networking with colleagues and experts in education.

What are the Program Highlights?

This workshop is limited to 30-40 participants, which allows a deeper and more involved experience than in a larger, conference setting. Planned activities include:

  • A reception for participants and presenters, including a poster program, on the first evening of the workshop;
  • A field trip to a local school;
  • A realistic game simulation of the challenges of education reform (The Change Game);
  • Breakout sessions on E/PO planning and educational technology; and
  • Opportunities for substantive interaction with practicing classroom teachers, experience with inquiry/standards based curricular materials; and exploring the diversity of roles for scientists in E/PO
