Iain obtained his Ph.D. under Jacco van Loon in 2009, on mass loss from stars in globular clusters. Since then, he has maintained an interested in both stellar death and stellar populations as a whole. His best known works are in spectral energy distribution fitting of stellar catalogues to identify the fundamental properties of stars and the nature of any material around them. He was also fortunate to start his Ph.D. in the golden age of exoplanet discovery, so has aided the discovery and characterisation of several planets around other stars using the transiting and microlensing techniques. He also maintains an active role in several other research areas, notably including human migration through genetic genealogy.
